For the past 515 days, Roman Reigns has been on top of WWE as the most dominant Universal Champion of all time. Many have stepped up to face him, and everyone has been beaten back in decisive fashion. This Saturday, he will take on Seth Rollins in another title defence – which is also his first singles match since Survivor Series. There’s a good reason for his recent lack of singles matches – and it stems from his brief battle with COVID-19.
Roman Reigns Is Still Feeling The Effects Of COVID-19 Almost A Month Later
Earlier this year, Roman Reigns was set to defend the WWE Universal Championship against Brock Lesnar at WWE Day One. This was cancelled, as WWE confirmed Roman Reigns tested positive for COVID-19. Now, while speaking with Sports Illustrated, Reigns had the following to say about how he’s feeling almost a month out from this.
“I still feel that actually. When I’m doing my conditioning because we don’t wrestle quite as much and we’re doing a lot of six-man tag team matches, I don’t have singles matches as much as I used to, so I have to continue to really push the conditioning on my own and I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks that when I really blow myself up on the bike or running, or whatever I’m doing, I can feel that tightness and a little bit of wheezing.
So it’s definitely something serious. As someone who is vaccinated and boosted, it still got to me and I still felt the effects. While they weren’t as severe as they can be for some, it did hang around and linger for a while.”
Seth Rollins Is Likely To Claim The WWE Universal Championship On Saturday
Right now, WWE has no plans of making the Universal Championship vacant, but a title change on Saturday is feeling more likely than ever. WWE can’t have one of their top champion being unable to wrestle in singles matches, especially with Wrestlemania so close. Seth Rollins makes sense on multiple levels to defeat Reigns, having always been one step ahead of Reigns since the breakup of the Shield.
Current WWE plans put Seth Rollins as Universal Champion going into Wrestlemania as well, where he will meet Big E in a singles match. Roman Reigns is planned to battle Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania over the WWE Championship – which gives a few more months for him to recover fully.
