It appears that AEW (All Elite Wrestling) will be taking advantage of the fact hat Kenny Omega hold the top title of Lucha Libre promotion AAA, the Mega Championship.
He won the belt from Rey Fenix a few weeks back in Mexico, and is set to defend against Dragon Lee very soon, but he gained a new challenger first and we will see that match next Tuesday as it won’t be televised with AEW Dynamite.
Why AEW Dark?
When it comes to defending a title from another promotion, you would assume that both parties would want the match to reach as many eyes as possible, like when Eddie Edwards defended the GHC Championship from Pro Wrestling NOAH against El Fantasma on Impact Wrestling a few years ago. This indicates that maybe the partnership between AAA & AEW isn’t that strong yet, and this defense which will be broadcasted via YouTube is AEW testing the waters of this new budding relationship.
Between this and Rey Fenix & Nick Jackson meeting in a singles match, I think we’re heading to a AAA Title defense being on Dynamite very soon, that being the rematch between Fenix & Kenny Omega, which if done right could shoot Fenix into singles wrestling stardom for AEW. It could also be used to set up a rematch between Omega & Pentagon Jr, who met at All In.
Jack Evans
While anyone watching AEW knows exactly how good Kenny Omega can be, Jack Evans is a bit more of an engima to viewers. He’s been in a tag team with Angelico, but hasn’t been able to properly showcase how good he is yet to AEW fans. He hasn’t shown off any of his star potential, with Hrybrid2’s tag matches being overall underwhelming and him not receiving any promo time. He showed personality in spades during his time in Lucha Underground, and was one of the most incredible and innovative wrestlers on the independent circuit in the mid 2000’s. This match against Omega could be exactly what he needs to show everyone why he matters to AEW, and isn’t just another guy capable of doing cool flips.
This match should be an absolute treat for viewers, and if you don’t know anything about either man, should be a great entry point. It will air on AEW Dark next Tuesday, November 26th.
