While a war of sorts rages on between All Elite Wrestling and WWE NXT, things behind the scenes are much more civil. WWE are about to launch another round of their annual tag team tournament, known as the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. It is a throwback to the tournaments Dusty Rhodes would book back in companies like NWA, and has been fantastic with every installment. With Dusty being so iconic to the identity of NXT, and treated with such respect, it’s amazing that some feel this is a slap to the face of his son Cody Rhodes.
Cody Rhodes owns the trademark to the name Dusty Rhodes, having filed for it earlier this year. He has given them the rights to use his fathers name for the tag team tournament. He has also allowed NWA to use the tagline Hard Times for their upcoming PPV. Cody might own the rights to his fathers iconic name, but he doesn’t want to keep it for himself. He knows how much his fathers legacy means to wrestling as a whole. He doesn’t want to hide that away, it isn’t what Dusty would have wanted.
Cody Rhodes Takes To Twitter To Clear Up Misinformation
Cody replied to a fan earlier today to ensure there was no confusion in this regard. Twitter user @rundownnetwork had this to say to Cody “I know if I worked for a company that paid for my training, made me rich, allowed me to meet my wife and then allowed me and my wife to both quit even though I had a contract I’d be pissed to. Right @CodyRhodes? They sound absolutely terrible.” They were taking Cody’s on camera persona to heart, when in reality Cody has never had anything ill to say about WWE. Sure he might have been a bit annoyed about his character direction like most, but he regards his time there well and doesn’t attack the company like AEW fans often do. His response was as followed. “If you follow this account, than I’m sure you’ve seen how complimentary to WWE I am and often. I literally just gave them rights to use my dads name for their tag tournie.”
