SCU became the first men in All Elite Wrestling to lose a championship. They are possibly also the first people to lose a championship on a cruise ship. They became the inaugural AEW Tag Team Champions when they knocked off The Lucha Brothers to win the tournament to crown champions. They would hold the belts for 83 days, and defeated teams like The Young Bucks, Jericho & Sammy Guevera, and Private Party before losing the championships to the team of Hangman Page & Kenny Omega. Many have complained this team seems a bit thrown together, but their history dates all the way back to 2016.
Kenny Omega & Hangman Page Were Both In Bullet Club
While The Elite has become it’s own brand, it started as an offshoot of the Bullet Club faction in NJPW. Kenny Omega spent a few years as the leader of Bullet Club, and during his time at the top, a young man named Adam Page would join their ranks and learn the ways of those above him. In NJPW style, he would wrestle many multi-man tag team matches, teaming with his stablemates. One very common man for him to team with was Kenny Omega. They first teamed in August 2016 when alongside Tanga Loa & Yujiro Takahashi they would defeat the Los Ingobernables de Japon unit of BUSHI, EVIL,Tetsuya Naito & Jay Lethal.
That was just the first of their team ups, but they would only have one traditional tag team match in their time in NJPW. This happened during World Tag League in 2016, when they were defeated by Tomohiro Ishii & Kazuchika Okada during the build to the epic encounter between Omega & Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 11.
Who Will Be Their First Challengers For The AEW Tag Team Championships?
With them being the new champions of the best tag team division in the world, they will now have many top teams coming for them. Be it The Young Bucks, Lucha Brothers, Private Party, Santana & Ortiz, or a rematch with SCU, there is no shortage of great matches to come for this team. With AEW Revolution quickly approaching, they will be keeping a close eye on the tag team rankings to see who will be their likely challengers at the coming PPV.
