When it comes to wrestling in 2020, Joey Janela is a weird figure. He is mostly known to fans as the wild promoter of the aptly titled ‘Joey Janela Spring Break’ shows which have stolen lots of spotlight on past Wrestlemania weekends. Janela mainly has a reputation as a hardcore wrestler, which while a fine niche to have really limits what companies want him to do.
Even in All Elite Wrestling his first major match was a Lights Out match with Jon Moxley, a hardcore brawl for the ages. This would have likely established him as a hardcore wrestler in AEW as well, and that has remained true even into his current feud with Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford. However, there was one match in AEW which he feels is one of the most important in his career.
Joey Janela vs. Kenny Omega
While in typical Janela fashion, he has had a brilliant hardcore match with Kenny Omega, they would also follow that up with a straight up wrestling match on the fourth episode of AEW Dynamite. It is widely considered to be one of the best matches from that first stretch of episodes for Dynamite, as both men gave great performances. In an interview with The Wrestling Inc Daily, he spoke on how important this match was to him.
“It was great. I just wanted to show everyone that I could go. That match almost didn’t happen so for them to let it happen was a big deal for me. Some of my friends from home came up to watch it so maybe my career peaked at that point. “ joked Janela.
The Future Of Janela
At only 30 years old, there will be a lot more chances for Joey Janela to be a star in wrestling. He has the type of odd charisma that gets people behind him, and a proud outspoken attitude which fans appreciate as well. That attitude might get him into trouble with some, but it could also be what helps him stand out in AEW and get him to a higher spot on the card.
He is currently looking to end a feud with Kip Sabian and his ex-girlfriend Penelope Ford, with Janela having beaten Sabian in a Falls Count Anywhere match on a recent AEW Dark episode. After Revolution, we could see this feud continue or either man enter a bigger angle.
