The marquee match of the February 28 Super Viernes saw the finals of the Torneo Nacional Incredible de Parejas tournament. The concept of the tournament is teaming one Technico (face) with one Rudo (heel) to see which team can come out on top. While the tournament doesn’t ever seem to lead to anything long-term, it does provide a few weeks of content for Arena Mexico.
With title defense being few and far between in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) it would make more creative sense to make this tournament about a future title shot, but with the Mexican National Tag Team Championship tournament makes up for it right now.
The match itself saw Caristico (formerly known as Mistico) and Forastero against Cavernario and Volador Jr. was not as good as it should have been considering the talent level of all involved. With that being said, the match was still an average and passable.
The crowd was into it and gave a reaction when Felino came out for the distraction to cost Cavernario and Volador Jr. the second fall. Caristico and Forastero would win both falls and the tournament. It’s hard to determine the value of such tournaments, but if CMLL makes an effective Felino/Cavernario storyline out of it, then it will have served some purpose.
Overall, Super Viernes was a decent show and provided a solid night of wrestling, especially for those who are new to the CMLL product. Fans of New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) are familiar with a lot of the upper card names in the promotion and hopefully will see more of them as NJPW and the IWGP Conception continue their international expansion.
