AEW Dynamite is on tonight and as always we here at the Overtimer will give you the same in-depth coverage you’ve come to expect. That means a live recap and results, plus an in-depth look at everything’s that’s on tap! As usual Dynamite has a fair few matches announced in advance tonight so let’s get to it! Marko Stunt has another big mountain to climb tonight as he goes up against the Exalted One himself, Brodie Lee!
Brodie Lee vs. Marko Stunt
Yannow, when they announced Lance Archer would be debuting last month, they did so with the classic “Lance Archer in action” line. No opponent announced, just letting you know the guy would be winning a squash match. That’s basically code for that. And I was already excited for it to a degree since I knew what Archer was all about and how much of a big deal he could be. But when the show aired and minutes before the bout it was stated that Archer would specifically be facing Marko Stunt, I had two thoughts. A) Oh holy crap. And B) Why did they not announce that in advance?! I was immediately buzzing about it.
I say this as one of Marko Stunt’s biggest supporters… I say this as a guy who wrote this column endorsing him back when his very existence was somehow controversial. I say this with the utmost of love: Marko was born to be manhandled in a wrestling ring. In the 14 years that I’ve been watching wrestling, it was without a doubt the greatest squash match I’ve ever seen. Archer could not have possibly had a single better opponent for a debut. And while I wouldn’t go to this well too much, as if people get too accustomed to Marko taking this abuse it’ll lose it’s impact, when the time is right, you should absolutely book Marko against more monsters.
Needless to say, I’m happy to see the Exalted One Brodie Lee taking on Marko tonight. And it’s a match that’s been built to quietly for a few weeks as well. While I don’t expect it to be as out-and-out violent as the Archer match, it should no doubt make a real monster out of Brodie as well. And it has another interesting wrinkle to it: the meaningful glances Brodie has given Marko didn’t seem like intimidation to me. It seemed like intrigue. The Dark Order is always looking for more members and they love to especially target the underdogs, those who are struggling. Interestingly the Dark Order did offer Marko a mask several months ago. He turned it down but that was before the Exalted One arrived.
I think in this match we’ll see Marko getting up in spite of taking insane damage and atleast attempting to continue fighting. That’s the kind of thing that would earn Brodie’s respect I think. Brodie Lee over, obviously. But I wouldn’t be surprised if he has another mask in his back pocket, a particularly small one…
