Another episode of AEW Dynamite is on tap here this evening and boy is there a lot to talk about for this one. In a match with major ramifications in the women’s division, we have Hikaru Shida, Britt Baker, Penelope Ford and Kris Statlander squaring off in a fatal four way match here tonight! You can expect the same coverage of this show as always, which means in-depth results and recaps, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap tonight. Like I said, lot to discuss so let’s get into it!
Britt Baker vs. Hikaru Shida vs. Penelope Ford vs. Kris Statlander
While it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s been heavily teased that this match is more or less a No. 1 Contender’s match. And really even if they hadn’t hinted anything, just looking at it, it’s kind of obvious. Now that Nyla Rose is back, we can expect her to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship at Double or Nothing which is just a week and a half away now. With her feud with Bea Priestley put on indefinite hold, it stands to reason this match will determine her opponent.
Britt Baker has been one of AEW’s highlights throughout the first five months of 2020. She gets a little bit deeper into her self-righteous role model gimmick every week and has been improving by leaps and bounds as a promo since it started. Even though on paper she seemed like a good fit for a posterchild babyface, she really is just a natural heel. In a different situation, she’d be a logical choice for the next champion but with a heel incumbent still going strong, it’s probably not going to happen any time soon.
Kris Statlander had a lot of buzz around her at the very tail end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 but in spite of her best efforts, her two women’s title matches did not really light the world on fire like they’d hoped. Though in the first instance that was almost entirely because of booking. It’s perhaps for the best that she take a bit of a backseat for now as while she definitely has promise, and I do believe she’ll be very good one day, she’s not at the level to be holding a title right now.
Penelope Ford sticks out a lot in this field. She’s achieved by far the least of any of the four. But her act with Kip Sabian was starting to get some heat right before the pandemic started and I don’t think they’ve forgotten that. Plus she’s really underrated in general and they did give her a burst with an upset win over Riho that, in hindsight was pretty wise. There’s every reason to not expect her to win, but she should make for a good accounting of herself here.
Hikaru Shida is the obvious favorite. She’s actually been at the top spot in the rankings of the women’s division for what feels like the whole year and has one of the best win/loss records in the company period, she’s 7-1 in 2020. It’s been the elephant in the room for a while as to when she’s going to get a title shot. This seems like a good time to make it happen to me. Hikaru Shida to improve to 8-1 tonight.
