Earlier today, we would see Sammy Guevara admit his faults before apologizing to Sasha Banks over comments made back in 2016. That seemed to be the end of it, as he would apologize directly to her which was accepted, and made a good public apology too. However, AEW didn’t make their statement yet, and we now know that Guevara has been suspended at this time.
AEW Has Suspended Sammy Guevara Without Pay
In a statement posted to their social media platforms, we learned the following. “AEW insists on doing our part to create a world of understanding and respect for humankind. We therefore strongly condemn the extremely offensive and hurtful words of Sammy Guevara. As such, effective immediately, Sammy is suspended without pay until further notice. Sammy has agreed to undergo extensive sensitivity training, and upon completion, his future status within the company will be re-evaluated. During his suspension, his salary will be donated to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville.”
This is a very hard stance to take on this issue, given his apology was accepted, but it is unstandable. AEW are still a fairly new company, and they need to set precedent on how they will handle situations like this, as they will happen. They have always been positioned as a very progressive company in comparison to others like WWE, and part of that means taking a hard stance when it comes to issues like this.
Guevara Will Have To Be Written Off TV
While he serves his suspension, we can expect AEW to come up with a storyline reason for his absence. Alongside the rest of the Inner Circle, Guevara is a major player within the company and a common fixture on TV. He recently main evented Dynamite alongside Chris Jericho when they failed to defeat Chuck Taylor & Trent of The Best Friends. We will likely see Sammy removed from TV under the guise of an injury stemming from that match.
There is very little doubt that he will be back. Just with a serious blemish on his record. His case is fairly minor, and while what he said was vile, he seems very genuinely remorseful about it, and is looking to better himself.
