Will Karl Anderson Finally Claim The IWGP United States Championship From Jon Moxley?

Next week at Night One of AEW: Fyter Fest 2021, we have a major singles title match on the card. Once again, Jon Moxley is going to be defending the IWGP United States Championship in an AEW ring, having previously defended the championship against Yuji Nagata on an episode of AEW Dynamite. Next week however, he could finally face the end of the reign as original plans could come back around to bite him when he faces Karl Anderson.

Karl Anderson Was Originally Planned To Defeat Jon Moxley For The IWGP United States Championship In 2020

Back in 2019, Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows were at a crossroads with WWE. They were nearing the end of their contracts, and had some limited talks with outside promotions such as the then fairly new AEW, and their old home of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Some plans were in the works, such as them debuting at the end of the first episode of AEW Dynamite, and more importantly Karl Anderson claiming the IWGP United States Championship from Jon Moxley at Wrestle Kingdom.

Anderson & Gallows would end up signing new deals with WWE, only to be released following Wrestlemania 36 as part of a major series of roster cuts. Since then, Anderson & Gallows have been mainly seen in Impact Wrestling, where they recently held the Impact Wrestling Tag Team Championships, and have been showing up on AEW frequently as part of The Elite. They’ve been a thorn in the side of Jon Moxley in AEW, as they’ve helped Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks defeat Moxley.

Anderson Was A Top Worker Back In NJPW

While Anderson is mostly used in tag team matches these days, many still sing the praises of his singles highlights in New Japan Pro Wrestling. AEW fans got a refresher from a video package last week at Road Rager. His two biggest matches were taking Hiroshi Tanahashi to the limit in a match over the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and facing Kazuchika Okada in the finals of the 2012 G1 Climax. Anderson is many years out from those performances, but remains a rock solid worker.

We will hopefully see some of the Anderson of old on AEW next week, as he looks to deliver on the hype of his biggest singles match in a very long time. When you add in potential interference from The Elite, and that Moxley only really has allies in Eddie Kingston & Frankie Kaziarian to ward them off, it could be a messy fight for sure.

Moxley’s reign as champion has been tricky due to his prominence in AEW, and with Anderson back on his way to NJPW in the coming months, this might be a solid way to get that belt back into the mix in Japan.

Could you see the original plan of Karl Anderson dethroning Jon Moxley coming into play next week at Fyter Fest? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
