So many things in professional wrestling rely on relationships and this has led to many fans wondering how did someone knows this person and so on, but This Day in Wrestling History was one of those relationships coming full circle.
Bill Goldberg rose like a shooting star in WCW in the late 1990s, and his wrestling career started like so many did and that’s through a chance meeting at a gym.
Sting reportedly saw Goldberg at his gym, and he approached Goldberg about giving professional wrestling a try.
It’s the same way Sting was discovered and he paid it forward.
Meeting for the title
On September 14, 1998, things came full circle as Goldberg defended the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Sting on WCW Monday Nitro.
It was only fitting that Goldberg had to defend not just the Franchise in WCW, but also the one that got him into the business. He talked about it in his book, I’m Next.

“Wrestling Sting, the guy I revered more than anyone from the beginning, was like a dream. For me, it was like wrestling Hogan because wrestling those guys meant that I’d made it. It was weird because he got me into the business and I’ve always looked at him like he was the king of WCW and I never envisioned myself rising to that level. When I started wrestling, I used to joke ‘Well, I’ll get in there and wrestle Sting after a few weeks.’
“When I finally did wrestle him, it was great because I enjoyed watching him and I knew the combination could make for a great match. Every time we wrestle, we try to put something…into it, to do something new. Wrestling with him is special because he’s the fan favorite and you get a different kind of feeling, but wrestling against him was still exciting because I knew it would be worthwhile to watch. It’s always great to see things like this happen when there’s so much negativity surrounding the sport on any given day.
We always hear stories about loyalty being tested, relationships being shattered and so on, and it makes moments like on this day in wrestling history shine all the brighter.
