AEW and Impact Wrestling have changed the landscape of professional wrestling in huge ways when they worked together for the bulk of 2021.
While it was beneficial to both companies, Impact Wrestling may have gained the most out of it as Kenny Omega defeating Rich Swann for the Impact World Championship gave then international exposure.
While Impact Wrestling hasn’t gone anywhere thanks to their steadfast loyal fanbase, they dropped below the radar for a few years.
The new prominence led to a former Impact (TNA) star, Christian Cage, to face Omega and bring the title a step closer to coming home even more medial buzz happened.
Of course, had AEW promoted the matches of their stars on Impact more it could’ve made a bigger mark, but that’s most likely a pride thing.
But according to Ringside News, it’s all over now.
Closing the Forbidden Door
Their partnership was always intended to be a temporary one despite some fans wishing/hoping Tony Kahn would purchase Impact Wrestling, and it looks like the end is here.
There were reports circulating on social media Saturday before Impact’s Bound For Glory that this would mark the end of them working together.
And when Josh Alexander defeated Christian to bring the title fully home, it looks like the rumor may be true.
Never fully closed
While their partnership helped both companies and others during the pandemic, it’s going to be interesting to see what’s to come with AEW if this are going back to what they were.
Near the beginning of AEW, Tony Kahn had reportedly said he didn’t want to have other companies’ championships mentioned on AEW programming as he considered it free publicity.
We could see AEW go back to that, though that would be a stretch as they helped give wrestling fans so many different avenues and exposure to other companies.
Impact, on the other hand, always has their doors open to other companies and talent, so we doubt they’ll shut down at all.
Working together
What these companies working together proved was that it’s possible to cooperate with others as long as people are willing to set their pride aside.
It’s a difficult task, but it can be done and we’ve had some of the best wrestling in years as the various talent got to intermix.
To be fair, fans of the Indie promotions get so see these all of the time, and it just goes to show there’s a far wider wrestling world out there beyond the big companies, and it makes for exciting times.
