Over the past few years in WWE, one of the most easily hated characters in the company has been Baron Corbin. From his time as the acting General Manager of Monday Night RAW, to his current gimmick as the protege of former WWE Champion JBL – it’s been easy to hate Corbin. However, when would have a few bad months and become flat broke – fans really began to pull for what WWE called “Bum Ass Corbin”, and he feels like if that character kept going – he would have finally been turned babyface.
Despite being one of the best villains in recent memory within WWE, Baron Corbin almost became a fan favorite.
Baron Corbin Could Have Went Face If The Bum Ass Corbin Character Kept Going
Baron Corbin appeared on Busted Open Radio ahead of the Royal Rumble, when he would reflect back on the Bum Ass Corbin era of his career – and how fans got behind him in a huge way.
“So it was so funny, when I was doing the ‘broke-down, bum ass Corbin,’ people were starting to cheer and it was almost like a weird, kind of uncomfortable feeling for me when I would come out because I would walk down the aisle and there would be people holding money out. I mean I probably could have made $500, a thousand a night with people holding out $20s. I had people shoving it in my car windows when I’d leave the venue, it was wild and I think that if it had lasted longer, it probably would have full-fledged turned me to the other side and I think that’s one of the reasons we cut it earlier than we probably should’ve.”
The character would come to an end before this happened, with Corbin becoming directionless until he would link up with JBL. His run in the 2023 Royal Rumble match would see him attacked by Brock Lesnar on the floor, and suffered an F5. Corbin was brought into the ring and thrown out shortly after, marking an unremarkable day for Corbin.
It seems clear that WWE has no clear plan for Corbin in 2023, though the partnership with JBL has potential – should Corbin chase a midcard championship like the WWE United States Championship.
