Few AEW careers will be as weird as that of Lio Rush. With all the youth and skills of a potential future AEW World Heavyweight Champion – Rush had a lot of potential when he got a contract with AEW. However, after just two matches – Rush has already left the company.
Lio Rush Seemed To Be Done With AEW After Tony Khan Made Comments About Big Swole
This comes after the regretful comments made by Tony Khan on New Years Eve. They were in regard to Big Swole, who commented on AEW’s lack of diversity in comments following leaving the company. Instead of just moving forward and being professional, we’d see Khan ignore what Swole said, and say he didn’t renew his contract because he found her not to be a good wrestler.
Lio Rush was the first to respond, demanding Tony Khan deliver an apology. Following this, Rush didn’t show up on AEW TV again, and was taken out of the storyline surrounding Dante Martin & Team Taz. Rush was working as a mentor to Dante Martin, who has now reconnected with Matt Sydal instead.
Not Another Retirement
However, this is not another retirement for Lio Rush – who has already done so multiple times. He would reveal that his AEW contract will come to an end on February 14th – and he won’t be renewing. He will be wrestling tomorrow night for Game Changer Wrestling, being in a six way ladder match which also includes the legendary PCO.
It’s becoming clear that Lio Rush & contracts don’t work well, which likely makes him a great pick for someone who will rule the indies for the next decade. There are plenty of companies who can benefit from having someone like Rush on their shows. The only company that seemed to work nicely for him was New Japan Pro Wrestling. Rush is a perfect fit for their Junior Heavyweight division, and many hope to see him enter Best of The Super Juniors tournament in the future.
