NXT Takeover events have been consistently some of the best content WWE has put out over the past few years. Even a bad NXT Takeover event is a fantastic show from top to bottom, it’s just weaker by comparison. NXT Takeover XXX is a very strong card on paper, and one that could signal an air of change for the Black & Gold brand. Let’s break down the five matches on this card.
Keith Lee Defends The NXT Championship Against Karrion Kross
At the Great American Bash, then NXT North American Champion Keith Lee would also claim the NXT Championship from Adam Cole. This set him on a collision path with Karrion Kross, a man who would do anything to get this title shot. He demolished Dominic Dijakovic, terrorized the locker room, and made Keith Lee demand a match with him at Takeover. This is a huge test for the new champion, as two of the strongest forces in NXT today clash.
Io Shirai Defends The NXT Women’s Championship Against Dakota Kai
Io Shirai holds perhaps the most prestigious women’s championship in all of North America in the NXT Women’s Championship, but now she’s learning it’s hard to keep hold of. She defeated Tegan Nox in her first defense, and would then be run down by Dakota Kai. Kai would beat Rhea Ripley to make this match official, and this is her chance to prove she’s a star. With Raquel Gonzalez in her corner, it won’t be an easy match for the Genius of the Skies, who will be riding solo.
History Will Be Made In A Five Man Ladder Match
Keith Lee wouldn’t stay double champion for long following his victory of the NXT Championship. He would give the North American Championship up, provided many men would get a chance to win it. This has led to a huge five man ladder match, featuring Cameron Grimes, Johnny Gargano, Bronson Reed, Velveteen Dream and Damien Priest.
No matter who wins, history will be made. Gargano & Dream could become the first ever two time holders of the championship, Priest could become the oldest man to ever hold the title, and Grimes & Reed have a chance to win a title in their first Takeover appearance. Anything could happen, but we will see a new champion.
Adam Cole Looks To Shut Pat McAfee Up
It’s odd not seeing Cole defend the NXT Championship on a Takeover after so long, but he still has a huge match. The world will be watching as he faces down former NFL punter Pat McAfee, who went too far when he kicked Cole in the head. It will be his first wrestling match ever, and he might be just a bit over his head, as he faces one of the best in the world.
Timothy Thatcher & Finn Balor Meet In A Grudge Match
Balor & Thatcher were two men who had a chance to get into the NXT North American Championship ladder match. Thatcher lost the inital triple threat match after passing out to a choke from the now injured Dexter Lumis, while Balor lost the second chance singles match to Velveteen Dream. During that match with Dream, Thatcher would come down to beat Balor down, leading to his loss. This is a pure grudge match, as both men just want to settle the score.
