AEW Dark rolls on. This next match is actually legitimately interesting one to me on paper. Alan Angels is the guy you might know from various online rants from people furious that Kenny Omega had a real match with him before pinning him with a move he uses several times a match and never pins anyone with. Now he faces another of the world’s top workers in Rey Fenix, who we’re seeing in an AEW ring for the first time since week 1 of this pandemic. I’m curious to see if he treats this match with Angels the same way.
As Alan comes out they actually do acknowledge the buzz created by Angels’ match with Kenny and put over the outing he had. Really making me think they might’ve signed him. As Fenix emerges it’s noted that due to travel restrictions PAC is stuck in the UK and Pentagon in Mexico whilst Fenix is trapped in the US. So the three members of the Death Triangle all forced to stay in separate countries.
Alan Angels vs. Rey Fenix
Fenix with a waistlock, Angels reverses. Fenix with a side headlock. Angels reverses into a top wristlock. Pulls him into a headlock. Fenix rolls him back, backward roll into a casadora, Angels counters with a small package for a 2 count. O’Conner Roll blocked but Angels spins into a Sunset Flip for a 2 count, Fenix springboards into a back flip to his feet for a big superkick! Gorgeous! Cover for a nearfall! Fenix holds him down with a chinlock. Hooks both arms and gets him with a karate chop to the neck and then a slap to the head. Heel hook for just a moment, elbow drop to the back!
Angels blocks a back suplex with an elbow. Big left to the face. Alan charges but Fenix with a boot up, goes to the second rope, Angels cuts him off with a punch but Fenix rebounds and springs to the top rope for a lightning speed missile dropkick for a nearfall! Fenix pulling Angels up, Alan surprises him with a slap but Fenix responds with a big boot! Charges, Angels with a boot up! Fenix blocks the second one and takes him to the apron but Angels with an enziguri, Springboard Shotgun Dropkick! Hoists him up, Fireman’s Carry Sit-Out Powerbomb for a nearfall! Fenix rolls to the outside, Angels tries to pursue but a superkick to the leg takes him to the apron! Fenix onto the apron, charges but Angels clotheslines him and lands him hard on the apron!
Alan throws Fenix into the ring and goes up top, Diving Double Footstomp to the back of the head and then he rushes into a second rope moonsault for a nearfall! Fenix rolls to the raised ramp. Angels and Fenix exchanging shots, both men collapse, one in the ring and one on the ramp. Fenix rushes in and bounces off the ropes about four times for a flying crossbody for a nearfall! Takes him into the corner, SUPER high speed springing spin kick! Pulls him out of the corner and hoists him up for the Black Fire Driver and that is that!
Winner: Rey Fenix
I’m now convinced that Alan Angels is actually under contract. They worked everyone into thinking he was just meant to be a jobber and got a big fake controversy going to give just that little bit of buzz to a newcomer that otherwise would’ve had none. And they had Kenny Omega introduce it because he’s such a natural lightning rod for that kind of stuff. Kinda clever if that’s really what they did.
