Every redemption story has a low point, and for Scott Hall, it was on November 19, 2013 in Glasgow, Scotland when he was told he was going to die.
In many cases, those in a situation like this don’t find a way out and never get to turn their lives around, but Hall had a couple of people looking out for him that day.
Told he’s going to die
During a nWo Wolfpack reunion in 2013, Hall wasn’t feeling well and checked into a hospital in Glasgow. Special thanks to prowrestlingstories.com for Hall’s quotes.
“I checked into the hospital. When I arrived, I was told that I had to wait in the emergency room.
“I remember telling a lady, ‘I have to detox from booze.’
“I was drinking really bad, and I said, ‘I have a little cold.’
“The lady came back and said, ‘No, honey, you have double pneumonia, and your heart’s in atrial fibrillation. You ain’t going anywhere.’”
As if that wasn’t bad enough, a young doctor walked in and brought the Bad Guy out.
“The doctor came in, and this dude goes, ‘You’re going to die!’
“I remember thinking, ‘Wow, where’d you learn that bedside manner, bro?’
“I said, ‘You don’t know anything about me, college boy! I will wait for you in the parking lot!’ I said, ‘You’re going to die, too!’”
“I remember thinking, ‘Wow, that kind of sucks. But, I’ve had a good ride.’”
The first of Hall’s saviors happened across him as his former tag team partner from Jim Crockett Promotions in 1984, Dan Spivey, came around the corner.
“I started wrestling with him years ago. We weren’t really good friends, but I knew he was currently working for the WWE as a sober companion.
“He came walking around the corner of this little curtain and goes, ‘Remember me?’
“I had tubes in me and oxygen, and I said, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’
“He goes, ‘We’re leaving for Houston in three hours.’”
Hall went with him and had a pacemaker defibrillator put in and even checked into the psyche ward on the staff’s suggestion. Hall stayed in Houston for eight of nine week, but said it didn’t stick.
He was concerned that he couldn’t stay sober and Diamond Dallas Page happened to call him.
“I was worried as I kept relapsing,” Hall recognized. “I don’t remember what happened, but I was sitting at home drinking vodka for breakfast when the phone rang. It was Dallas [DDP].
“He’s obnoxiously happy. The dude- he’s so positive, and it’s a shoot. He’s that way for real.
“He’s like, ‘Hey brother, hey brother, hey brother. Hey bro, bro, bro!’ You know, he’s like, ‘Come stay with me,’ and everything.
“I thought, ‘Well, I could rehab, or go stay with daddy. I tried rehab, and it wasn’t working.”
“I’m not sure what happened. I get asked this a lot, and I wish I knew what I did that was different, as I would tell everybody I know who’s struggling. But, I don’t want to drink anymore.”
“Dallas was there for me and gave me a safe place to stay. Kevin (Nash) had given me the same offer, and he only lives about 50 miles north of me in Daytona. But Kev’s a family man, and Dallas was there by himself, so it felt like a better fit.
“In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I’m renting a place about two blocks from Dallas now and flying in and out of Orlando.
“I still have a home in Florida, but I’m living in Atlanta for now, and it’s mostly because of Dallas.”
Saying goodbye
Scott Hall touched many people’s lives and so has DDP, and it’s no surprise that Page gave a heartfelt eulogy on his Instagram (@diamonddallaspage) to Hall following his passing.
“My brother has gone on to Valhalla to raise some hell with Dusty, Macho and all to many of our other brothers & sisters!
