WWE fans are still buzzing about the recent match over the Intercontinental Championship. Sheamus would challenge GUNTHER for the belt at WWE Clash At The Castle, and it was one of the most violent and hard hitting matches in WWE history. While GUNTHER came out on top that night, Sheamus has nothing to be ashamed about – and already considers it to be a defining moment in his career.
Sheamus Calls His Match With GUNTHER The Biggest Moment Of His Career
On the latest episode of the After The Bell podcast with Corey Graves, Sheamus had a chance to speak about his recent war with GUNTHER. The Celtic Warrior would be quoted saying the following about how all this hard work led to that match.
“They say Rome isn’t built in a day and success isn’t overnight, it took me 13 years in my WWE career to earn that moment and it was unbelievable. The reception I got when I went out there, I didn’t know what way it was going to go. Gunther obviously has a cult following from being NXT UK Champion for so many years, so I didn’t know what to expect. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. It’s probably the biggest moment I’ve had to this point in WWE.”
The match received widespread critical and fan acclaim, and was awarded five stars by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. It was Sheamus’s first five star match, with GUNTHER having four previous matches at or above that rating, with both matches against Ilja Draguov, his Takeover Cardiff Match against Tyler Bate, and a Pro Wrestling Guerilla match against Zack Sabre Jr.
Wanting The Grand Slam Status
Sheamus remains dedicated to gaining his Grand Slam champion status and claiming the WWE Intercontinental Championship following this loss. He recently stated he expects another good eight years in his in-ring career, plenty of time to claim the last piece he needs for his trophy case.
Very few fans would turn down a second clash between Sheamus & GUNTHER, with potential for an even better match between the two in a heated rematch. The card for Extreme Rules is still taking shape, and this could well be one of the headline matches.
