With Sin Cara asking for his release, it raises an interesting question, will WWE recast the character once again? As many know, the Sin Cara we currently know is not the original one who was brought into WWE years ago, formerly known as Mistico.
When they realized that Mistico simply wasn’t going to work out for WWE, they recasted the character to Hunico, who initially covered for Mistico when he suffered a wellness policy violation early into his run, but then lost the confusing Sin Cara vs. Sin Cara feud causing him to unmask, only to remask when he took over the character full time.
Sin Cara is the perfect balance of marketable yet lacking personality, making him very recastable. Here are a few strong candidates if they were to grant Sin Cara his release and go down this route.
Humberto Carrillo
Humberto Carillo exploded onto 205 Live in a classic match with Buddy Murphy, and following the WWE draft, he instantly became a star in a similar performance against then Universal Champion Seth Rollins. While it would be a tragedy to hide his face behind a mask, his high flying style would fit the character of Sin Cara perfectly, and he would breathe new life into the stale character.
El Hijo Del Phantasmo
This incredible luchador made his name in Lucha Underground as King Cuerno, and signed with WWE earlier this year, and has yet to make his debut for the company. WWE fans knowing nothing about him would make it easy for him to don the mask of Sin Cara and carry on the legacy of the faceless one. He brings both fantastic high flying and a surprisingly power game, as well as the best suicide dive in wrestling today.
Raul Mendoza
This young talented wrestler has appeared sparsely in WWE, appearing in the Cruiserweight Classic & on NXT TV, generally in a losing effort. He has the skills to make it big, but lacks any kind of allure to make him feel special. Becoming the mysterious maked character could breathe life into his career, while giving the mask a bright future.
The Sin Cara character has not had the greatest history, ever since its botched debut. But that doesn’t mean it should be abandoned completely, the mask is gorgeous and if the right person is behind it, could finally reach its intended level of success.
This is all purely speculation, Sin Cara at the time of writing has only requested his release and is still with WWE. We at The Overtimer will keep you updated on this situation as it unfolds, as the only thing we can guarantee at this time is that the recasting would go smoother than when they recasted Razor Ramon.9
