Jon Moxley has been one of the most exciting stars in all of wrestling since breaking free from WWE. He has had great matches in both All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling, with many more on the horizon. Fans react great whenever he shows up, and he is having the time of his life. He is currently feuding with Chris Jericho in AEW & Minoru Suzuki in NJPW, two of the most brutal heels in the world today.
Despite this, he has his critics like any wrestler does. We are in the era of opinions, and one person shared theirs on Moxley through their podcast. This is Eric Bischoff, the former president of WCW and RAW GM.
“To me, he’s two-dimensional”
On his 83 weeks Podcast, Bischoff got on the top of what he feels is keeping Jon Moxley from being a top star. “To me, he’s two-dimensional. And he needs to find that third dimension, you know, to get him to a Chris Jericho-type level. It’s nothing wrong with his work, nothing at all wrong with his character other than I’m not seeing a lot of depth to it. There’s a sameness to it. There’s not enough range to it.”
He makes a good point here, Jon Moxley, while a very exciting competitor has found his role and stays true to it. He plays the unhinged yet smart brawler to perfection, and while we have seen him do comedy in WWE, it isn’t something that works well with him. We don’t know if Moxley would ever have to re-invent himself the way that someone like Chris Jericho or Matt Hardy does, or if he would be able to.
That is a hard skill for any wrestler to obtain, and we have seen top stars who never needed to do this, but they often are subject to mixed reactions as their act gets stale. A great example of this is John Cena, who spent many years on top of WWE, and despite being a great performer, people got sick of his act. This was also because Cena would never spend time away, even rushing back from serious injury. If fans don’t get a break, they’ll turn on anyone.
Do you think Jon Moxley needs to add more layers to his character, or is he fine the way that he is? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
