Worlds Collide 2020 is upon us, everyone! Mia Yim vs. Kay Lee Ray will kick us off here tonight! It’s a large scale event this time around, pitting NXT against NXT UK in a battle for brand supremacy! NXT defeated Raw and SmackDown at Survivor Series, but they did so with a little assist from overseas… now they must defend that title against NXT UK! Okay, so a title isn’t really on the line, but it seems much more dramatic when you frame it that way…
Regardless! We begin, as usual, with the pre-show! And we have a very interesting women’s bout to start us off!
Mia Yim vs. NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray (Non-title)
This one dates back to WarGames. Mia Yim and Kay Lee Ray were on opposite teams back then… although, Mia ended up not actually making it into the match, thanks to the turncoat Dakota Kai. Nevertheless, she gets her hands on one of her would-be opponents here as she takes on the NXT UK Women’s Champion herself, Kay Lee Ray!
Mia is one of the purest brawlers going in NXT. She’s rough and tumble and doesn’t care how hard you hit her. However KLR is more than accustomed to that, given the far more bruising style that NXT UK likes to put forth. Kay Lee Ray is women’s champ around those parts for a reason, she’s among the most gifted female competitors in all of WWE.
It should be a fine battle and it’s a helluva kickoff show match to be sure. How Kay Lee even got relegated to this at all is kind of maddening, but really shows how stacked the rest of the card truly is as the same would be said for anyone else here getting put on the kickoff.
There is an avenue here to setup something interesting.
Though this is non-title, if Yim wins here, she’ll no doubt earn herself a shot at the NXT UK Women’s Championship. This might entail a trip overseas to do so on KLR’s turf. That kind of interbrand mingling is always interesting. But ultimately it’s kind of unlikely. The smart money is definitely gonna be on Kay Lee to take the win here. It should be a very good, physical match until then however. It will set the tone for the rest of the show nicely.
