We’ve all heard the news about NXT moving to Wednesday nights in September, and many of us have also heard the rumors that Vince McMahon may have an increased role in it.
While the first was awesome news to us in general, the latter not so much.
A new Raw or Smackdown?
Chris Jericho commented on this at ewwresltingnews.com when he said he believes that once NXT hits a major network like USA, McMahon will become involved and it’ll become another Raw or Smackdown.
This is a legitimate point as Jericho pointed out, Vince McMahon is a genius. Is he always right in guessing what the fans want? Nope, but he’s on point more times than not. The problem here is that his current vision for the WWE is no where close to what the fans want.
But he listened and brought in outside help.
It took a few months of falling ratings, but McMahon eventually brought in Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff to run Raw and Smackdown respectively, and it paid immediate dividends as we were given consistent storylines and better matches.
Because of this, it’s safe to assume Triple H will continue to have a majority of control over NXT, but now with McMahon’s oversight.
What changes be coming?
Well, for one, the champions could change, depending on how McMahon feels about them. We hear the term, “I/he/she earned championship” when in reality they’re given the championships. Sure, they earn them through hard work, but in the end, it’s the head promoter, or booker, that determines who gets what title. In the case of the WWE’s main brands Raw and Smackdown, that’s Vince McMahon, and that could hold true for NXT when it switches over.
It could also mean a tamer version of what fans are used to seeing.
Basically, anything could be changed, but as Jericho said and many of us know, McMahon is a genius and may allow Triple H full autonomy as he continues to groom him to take over at some point.
Now, to be fair, this is all speculation. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but that it could or is possible.
Another aspect to take into consideration is this is going to be a war. As Jericho also said, AEW doesn’t want a war, but it’s coming since McMahon thinks it’s a war. Any competition is war, and so far, McMahon has won them all.
As the Monday Night Wars demonstrated, competitive rivalries bring out the best efforts from people, and this could be an awesome time to kick back and enjoy the show as wrestling fans.
Buckle up. This is going to be a fun ride.
