G1 Climax Night 5 saw two-time and current NEVER Openweight Champion Suzuki-Gun leader Minoru Suzuki face former NEVER Openweight Champion Jeff Cobb in A Block competition.
The first of those headline matches saw former IWGP Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight Champion Kota Ibushi (defending G1 Climax 29 champion) face former two-time Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight and five-time NEVER Openweight Champion Tomohiro Ishii (CHAOS).
The crowd in Hyogo was electric before the wrestlers locked up for only the second time in singles competition, as thoughts of their critically acclaimed BOSJ Finals match remains fresh in the minds of New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) fans.
Switchblade entered the match coming off a G1 Climax Night 3 victory over former IWGP Intercontinental Champion and G1 Climax 29 winner “Golden Star” Kota Ibushi. While Okada was able to defeat Bullet Club member Yujiro.
This was the first match between the two since Sanada defeated Goto in a New Japan Cup 2019 epic first-round encounter on March 11, 2019. Before his defeat to Yano, Sanada was untouchable after losing to Evil during New Japan Cup 2020.
Coming into the match, the two wrestled 20 singles matches against one another going back to 2003. Tanahashi held a 15-3-2 (wins-losses-ties) series led over Yano, yet they had not faced each other since August 2, 2015, during G1 Climax 25, when Tanahashi was able to defeat Yano.
Former two-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion Juice Robinson and Bullet Club member, former NEVER Openweight Champion and winner of New Japan Cup 2020 USA Kenta met for the first time in singles competition during G1 Climax 30 Night 4.
The leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) and IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental ‘Double Champion’ Tetsuya Naito faces fellow LIJ member Sanada in the marquee match of G1 Climax 30 Night 8.
