With a historic Survivor Series a few days away, reports claim that three’ a push by WWE creative to have Triple H compete alongside his NXT superstars in the Survivor Series elimination match.
On the surface, this seems like a good idea since he’s the mastermind behind NXT, but there’s at least one within WWE that disagrees.
Triple H disagrees
As I mentioned, it seems like a good idea for him to take part. It’d add veteran leadership and give NXT a future hall of famer in their pocket.
But this would fly in the face of everything he’s built with NXT.
Instead of allowing the younger talent to shine, Triple H would take a spot and focus from them. It’s similar to the old Alliance Invasion when Vince McMahon put WWE superstars like Steve Austin and Kurt Angle at the head of the Alliance talent pool.
There are plenty of reasons for this, such as headliners like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair not able to take part yet, but there were others like Booker T and plenty of younger talent. The main problem here was McMahon’s pride and vengeful tendencies as he also only had the Alliance win by cheating while the WWE won clean.
While McMahon’s pride in proving his product is moot here as NXT is part of WWE, the fact most fans and critics think NXT is the better of the three brands has to irk him. Then there’s the fact NXT has lost every ratings matchup with AEW since the two premiered. It was reported before NXT debuted on USA that if they lost the ratings war regularly, McMahon would take it over.
But does that really play a part in this?
Possibly. The truth is, this is the WWE’s best chance to reestablish themselves and give NXT the boost on Wednesday nights. Triple H is just a tool or weapon in McMahon’s arsenal. This is war, after all.
In the end, it will come down to a test of wills between Vince McMahon and Triple H. While McMahon signs the checks and provides funding for NXT, but Triple H has built NXT into a top brand, even if the ratings don’t show it.
The WWE relies too much on the Legends
This is another category that Triple H falls into, and another reason he’s being pressured to complete.
This has been McMahon’s way of boosting ratings and it’s worked, but at some point, he has to let the younger superstars build their own legacy. While I never get tired of seeing the Legends, they’re a far cry from fifteen to twenty years ago when they competed in the ring.
They still get louder pops than the current crop of superstars, which makes it difficult to move on. It’s understandable. This is a point that Triple H seems to understand while Vince McMahon doesn’t. This is the perfect was to describe the differences between the pair.
Maybe it’s time for McMahon to listen to Triple H and allow wrestling to interfere a little more in his drama. Like all parents, it’s time to let the kids play.
