It is always a shame when a wrestler has their career cut short. This happened to two major names in WWE, those being Edge & Paige. Edge retired due to neck issues just after Wrestlemania in 2011, and went out as World Heavyweight Champion, having defended against Alberto Del Rio the night before. He had a very full career and is one of the most decorated men in all of wrestling. Paige on the other hand was just getting started. She was forced into retirement at only 25 years old. She would go on to be the General Manager of Smackdown and have other roles in the company, but she didn’t have the time to properly cement her legacy as a wrestler.
With the Royal Rumble around the corner however, rumors are always flying about who could potentially return, with Paige & Edge being hot topics for this years event. Triple H himself has now spoken on this topic, in an interview with Gary Cassidy of SportsKeeda. You can listen to the clips relevant to this topic here.
“That Would Be A Personal Choice For Them”
The prospect of them returning to the ring requires two things, as Triple H explains in the following quote taken from the above interview. “So, with both of them, those would be personal choice for them… No, I shouldn’t say that. Personal choice would be a part of it, then medical choice for the other part. WWE is at a different level. There is no other level, almost, from a medical oversight standpoint. Every now and then, I’ll hear somebody else talk about, “Oh, their medical,” or something, and it doesn’t exist. Fact. Just because you have a doctor every now and then doesn’t mean you have a medical protocol, right?”
So as long as they are physically able to return and are wanting to do it, WWE really doesn’t have an issue with seeing them come back. Having two popular stars back in action is never a bad thing, but WWE performers are only human.
Long Term Health Comes First For Edge & Paige
He would also go on to emphasize that WWE puts their performers long term health first. They don’t want to see someone like Edge injured further just because seeing him wrestle would excite crowds.
“So, for us, there are certain perimeters. If we believe it’s not in your best interest, we put the human being first, and their long-term health. Life goes on for a long time after this ends. Especially now. The style and the physicality has increased dramatically, so if you get to a point where we’re telling you, medically, “Not in your best interest,” you can do a lot of things to get back to that.”
What do you think about what Triple H had to say on this topic, and do you think we could see either of these two return to the ring for another match at some point?
