Will Ospreay had the best year of his career in 2019 with New Japan Pro Wrestling. He competed in all three major singles tournaments with the New Japan Cup, Best Of Super Juniors, and the G1 Climax). He had some of the best matches of his career with the likes of Shingo Takagi and Kota Ibushi. He won back his IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
Despite all this, he has not forgotten his roots. He will return to them when he appears at Revolution Pro Wrestling’s annual High Stakes event in February. It’s unclear who he will face, but it’ll probably be the best match on the card if Ospreays record in 2019 carries over.
How Will Will Ospreay Start 2020?
It will be a hot start, as he is set to face the returning Hiromu Takahashi as he defends the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship under the bright lights of the Tokyo Dome. They have only had a few matches where they have clashed, and each one was incredible. Hiromu brings out the daredevil in Ospreay, and forces him to match his agility. It is a match that can honestly go either way. It’s a likely scenario that he doesn’t enter York Hall on February 14th carrying the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.
Could 2020 Be The Year Ospreay Fully Joins The Heavyweight Division?
After appearing in the G1 Climax this year, many are wondering if Will Ospreay will soon be finished competing in the Junior Heavyweight Division. He noticeably bulked up over the past few years, and combined with his height he does fit in with the heavyweights. He has also beaten just about everyone in the Junior Heavyweight Division, so having him as a heavyweight will give us many more fresh match-ups for the Aerial Assassin. He would stand out with his incredible agility, unless he’s facing Kota Ibushi, who also moved up a weight class, having formerly been a Junior Heavyweight Champion. It would also mean we could potentially see a match between Ospreay and fellow Brit Zack Sabre Jr. in a New Japan ring again, which would be another instant classic. That could even be the match for High Stakes, as Sabre is the current British Heavyweight Champion.
