In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Hiroshi Tanahashi said that if he beats Chris Jericho on 1/5 at the Tokyo Dome, then he will open the “forbidden door” by asking for an AEW world title shot. This is the first time would have directly referenced AEW in such a way. There are two talents who move between the two companies, those being Jericho & Jon Moxley.
While an AEW/NJPW partnership has seemed like a pipedream, having a match like Tanahashi vs. Jericho for the AEW Championship would be the perfect way to start it. Their match should be incredible, as they are two of the most skilled veterans in the wrestling industry.
How Could This Play Out?
Provided Hiroshi Tanahashi wins at the Tokyo Dome, which is likely given Chris Jericho has never won a match at Wrestle Kingdom, then he is owed a title shot. They could bring him over to AEW, and even have him win the championship. This could be the catalyst to something much bigger. Something fans thought they could never see after Kenny Omega left NJPW.
Kenny Omega & Hiroshi Tanahashi have faced each other just twice, with both men having a win over the other. The elusive third match would be a massive ordeal, as we would truly see who is better.
This is just one way this could work. We could also just see Jericho defeat the former ace of NJPW, and that be that. Tanahashi could win then fail to win the title match. Either way, it is nice to see any chance of a partnership between AEW & NJPW.
Could This Be Jerichos Final Match With NJPW?
When Chris Jericho showed up in NJPW a few years back, his intent was to face the top stars of the company. He had faced Kenny Omega, Tetsuya Naito, Kazuchika Okada, and now will face Hiroshi Tanahashi. Besides Kota Ibushi, he has faced all the men he wanted to. With his focus set on AEW & his music career with Fozzy, it makes sense that his time in NJPW could come to an end at Wrestle Kingdom.
