AEW has another new addition to their roster, and this time it is the son of wrestling legend Billy Gunn. Austin Gunn had wrestled on AEW Dark recently alongside his father in a winning effort against Preston Vance & Shawn Spears. The young talent has been in the wrestling industry for the past two years, and most notably worked in Ring of Honor as part of their Top Prospect tournament, and working in other smaller indies.
He is still very unproven in wrestling, and will join other young unsung talent like Sammy Guvera, Darby Allin & Jungle Boy. Scooping up young talent is a gamble, but it can be a huge benefit if they work out. Their other young talents have impressed so far, and it will be interesting to see if the son of Billy Gunn can surpass his father.
Did Austin Gunn Get A Job Because Of His Dad, Or From Talent & Potential?
It’s hard to not point a finger and say that he only got hired as his father is a backstage official for the company, giving him the pull to get his son a job. Austin has only 20 matches listed on cagematch.net, and finding footage outside of his AEW Dark performance isn’t easy, so it’s hard to tell exactly how good he is.
If they take their time, have him stay to shows like AEW Dark and undercard squash matches while working backstage with veteran talent like Dustin Rhodes, Arn Anderson, Diamond Dallas Page, and his father. Put him under the learning tree of legends and give him time to grow. He could likely join Anthony Ogogo as their developmental talents who we will only see a bit down the line in a major role. We can just hope they handle his talent properly, and book him according to his skill level. If he is a wrestling prodigy, people won’t mind him getting a big push early. If he’s still very much a rookie? We could end up with a bit of a mess.
What are your thoughts on this signing by AEW? Do you think he earned his spot in the company, or is this another case of nepotism in the wrestling business?
