The annual tag team tournament on NXT has already proven to be another fantastic one. The first round is completed, with Undisputed Era (Kyle O’Reilly) & Imperium (Fabian Aichner & Marcel Bartel) winning their matches last week, and the second set of matches happening last night. Here are the results to get you up to speed.
Broserweights defeat Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews
The newly created duo of Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne have started off their tag team career wonderfully. Defeating an experienced tag team who are former NXT UK Tag Team Champions in your debut match as a team is nothing to sneeze at.
We just saw Andrews & Webster take part in a vicious ladder match last Sunday, so they weren’t at 100% going into this match. They put up a valiant effort, but they would fall to the duo who could win it all. It was one of the best tag team matches of the year so far, and one that deserves to stay in that conversation throughout the year.
Dunne & Riddle will face Imperium in the next round of action.
Grizzled Young Veterans (James Drake & Zack Gibson) defeat Alex Shelley & KUSHIDA
No one expected Alex Shelley to lose his NXT debut, but you never count out the inaugural NXT UK Tag Team Champions. In a moment that sucked the life out of Full Sail, Zack Gibson & James Drake snuffed out the reunion of the Timesplitters.
Despite a strong effort from the former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, and Gibson & Drake having left a brutal ladder match on Sunday bruised and battered, the crafty brits were able to take the victory. This hopefully will not be the last we see of Alex Shelley in WWE, as that would be a more disappointing NXT run than that of James Storm. He is still scheduled to appear for Ring of Honor in February, so its not clear if he has signed a contract with WWE.
Grizzled Young Veterans will face Undisputed Era in the next round of action, and everyone wants to see them lose following this result.
