Edge returning to action after 9 years on the shelf has likely inspired many others to take a chance and lace up their boots one more time. One of these people is not Stone Cold Steve Austin. Having retired all the way back in 2003 after one final match The Rock, he never swayed on this. He remains an active part of WWE, doing special appearances and having run interviews on the WWE Network. He launched his own brand of beer, dabbled in acting, and has hosted TV shows.
Steve Austin Discusses The Chances Of A Return
In his review of the Royal Rumble on his podcast, he had the following to say when he was talking about Edge coming back.
“Basically you’re asking me, based on Edge’s return, would I consider making a return? No. Whatever Edge is doing has nothing to do with me, I’m done. I’ve already said I’m done.”
“When I see a guy whose kinda had a similar type of neck situation as I had, or neck surgery in general, and to leave the business when he did nine years ago and then come back, I’m like ‘Ok. Man, be careful out there.’ Ya know? Cause I haven’t seen you in action. And we know it’s a very physical business. You can get hurt any time, any way. It can be very dangerous. So just please be careful.”
Steve Austin broke his neck in 1997 in a match with Owen Hart at Summerslam, after a sitout piledriver gone wrong. This forced him to change into a style more focused on brawling, which would also help launch him into being the biggest star of his era.
He remains in great shape, and still looks like he could go for one last match whenever he shows up to raise some hell, but no matter how many times Vince tries to get him to return, he refuses to budge. He is one of the few to find finality in retirement from wrestling, and it should stay this way sometimes. Otherwise, you end up with matches like DX vs. Brothers of Destruction.
