It’s time again, for the best day of the week, every week… it’s Wednesday night and that means high quality wrestling! Tonight, Britt Baker goes up against Yuka Sakazaki in the latter’s debut on TNT! It’s AEW Dynamite once again this evening! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer and for the past half year, I’ve been giving the deep dive coverage on every major weekly wrestling show! You can expect the same tonight, meaning a live recap and results as they come about, plus the previews for everything we can expect! So let’s get started with this bout here!
Britt Baker vs. Yuka Sakazaki
So Britt Baker has been something of a revelation ever since her heel turn. She was always meant to be a poster child of the AEW Women’s division from the outset, but it wasn’t really clicking the way one would hope it would. The billboard-friendly dentist is great for PR but wasn’t exactly what the audience was looking for in a star babyface in 2020. She didn’t really have the natural likability or sympathy of a Riho, she wasn’t as unique as a Kris Statlander and while she’s solid enough for her experience level, she can’t exactly compete in-ring with Hikaru Shida.
But none of them have been stand-outs in promos, and that’s something she’s leaned into to pretty good success thus far. It’s good that this heel turn is working out because it seems almost a given to me that we’re looking at another Britt/Riho match at AEW Revolution in a few weeks. If not then, then pretty soon after.
For Yuka Sakazaki, this is her first match in AEW in quite a while. She was on opposite sides against Riho during the vaunted Joshi trios match at Double Or Nothing, and again in a triple threat that also involved Nyla Rose at Fyter Fest. Yuka lost on both nights but made some fans for her endearing wackiness and genie-inspired attire. Nearly eight months later, she finally makes her AEW Dynamite debut here tonight.
But considering the roll Britt’s on now, I can’t imagine this will be a particularly successful debut. Britt Baker over, and don’t be surprised if she keeps that Lockjaw hold in a lot longer than she has to afterwards as well. Gotta have that hard sell for the next big heel challenger.
