Tonight is the night. We’re but hours away from All Elite Wrestling’s first PPV of the decade, a major card to be sure, AEW Revolution! And it’s finally here… a match we’ve been waiting for since AEW’s last PPV, Full Gear in November! Cody had to wade through a lengthy struggle to make it happen, but finally he faces off with his old protege – it’s Cody vs MJF! My name is Jordan Huie, you are here with us at the Overtimer where you can expect the same full-on coverage as always! That means recaps and results from every segment as they come, plus previews of every single bout on the card this evening! There’s a lot going on for this event so let’s not waste any time!
Cody vs MJF
It’s crazy to think this one’s finally here. Technically it did start at Full Gear in November, but really, we’ve been waiting for it for much longer. Ever since MJF became Cody’s on-screen protege at the start of last year, we were waiting for the day that Max finally betrayed him. They teased the everloving hell out of it time and time again but didn’t pull the trigger until the time came where he could hurt Cody more than ever. He threw in the towel for him at Revolution, knowing that losing to Chris Jericho on that night would mean that he could never challenge for the world title again, lest he break his own stipulation. And then, after pleading his case until Cody forgave him, MJF dropped him with a low blow. Finally he showed his true colors.
Ever since then, he’s been a challenger to Chris Jericho for the top heel in the promotion, which is quite a feat considering Chris has so many years of high level experience on him, plus a whole stable to protect his title. MJF is gonna be huge for AEW, if he isn’t already. Honestly I feel pretty strongly that he may well close out 2020 as the world champion. Which makes this a really, really hard one to call.
On one hand, it’d be a gigantic victory for MJF, positioning him way up the card in a hurry. If he is gonna be champ several months from now, that ascent would be traced to this win. But on the other hand, this story has been so compelling and Cody’s fought so very hard just to make this match happen. It really seems wrong for him to lose in some ways, we gotta have the good guy win in the end, right?
But then, this is just their first match. Surely the first of many. Cody can get his win down the road. Ultimately, I feel strongly enough in this plan that I’m gonna say MJF over. And don’t expect him to ever shut up about it.
