Booker T wrestles his first match of 2020 is great news considering how fans and his fellow wrestlers have been begging to see him one more time. Unfortunately, many may be disappointed as he chose to wrestle for his own promotion ROW (Reality of Wrestling).
While most remember Booker T for his WWE years, he made his name in WCW with his brother, Stevie Ray, as the tag team Harlem Heat before transitioning into a singles career. He was a phenomenal wrestler and one of the few WCW guys Vince McMahon kept after purchasing the company, and he worked his way into the WWE Hall of Fame.
But despite what we’re often led to believe, the professional wrestling world doesn’t begin and end with the WWE. It just seems like it.
Booker T’s growing legacy
One thing that’s apparent is Booker T still has it when he steps into the ring. Sure, he’s older and may have lost a step, but who doesn’t? He and others have been giving back to the profession that helped make them for a while, and it’s a great thing to see.
It’s easy for us to look at an athlete or entertainer and think of them only in that light, especially since that’s usually the only way we see them. But there’s so much more to them than what’s generally visible, and we’ve been able to peel back the layers and see what else they have to offer.
For Booker T, he’s shared his views on his podcast, showing himself to be highly intelligent, well-spoken, and thoughtful when it comes to any and all topics and situations. It’s what makes someone a great coach, as he’s like our favorite teacher whose class we couldn’t wait for. Knowledge pours out of the man to anyone willing to listen.
So it’s not surprising that he started his own wrestling promotion in 2006 (Then called Pro Wrestling Alliance — PWA) out of Houston, Texas to give, in his own words, professional wrestlers the opportunity to properly train (they offer a 2 year program instead of the typical 3 to 6 months from other schools), and keep Paul Boesch’s Houston Wrestling legacy alive.
What’s really awesome about this is the money made from the shows is donated to Booker T. Fights For Kids Foundation that help kids stay off the streets by showing them the benefits of a better life.
Like peeling an onion, more layers to Booker T continue to be exposed for us to see, and it only raises him in our eyes.
