WWE has faced some serious backlash with their choice to have 53 year old Goldberg beat The Fiend for the Universal Championship. They also got some for having Undertaker drop a fresh AJ Styles in a single chokeslam. Actions like those are putting a serious amount of heat on the old guard of wrestling with fans, could this be an intentional action?
This Wrestlemania Lacks The Usual Hype
The build to this years Wrestlemania is nearing it’s end, and people simply are not that excited about it. Compared to last year, when we had Kofimania & The Rise of The Man getting everyone to tune in, where we lack that key storyline this year. There is some excitement behind Drew McIntyre facing Brock Lesnar, and Charlotte Flair choosing NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley for her title shot. Beyond that, there isn’t much getting people to tune in. Add in the controversy of Goldberg beating The Fiend, and fans have little reason to be excited for Wrestlemania. With a month left, and just Elimination Chamber left on the road to Wrestlemania, they will be kicking into high gear soon. The direction is shaping up to be old generation vs. the new.
It Could End Up Being About Establishing The Current Stars
With matches like Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg & The Fiend vs. John Cena being rumored for the show, as well as ones like Sasha Banks vs. Trish Stratus teased, this years Wrestlemania could help truly establish these names as the stars going into the new decade. WWE’s reliance on nostalgia is going to die out if they don’t build new stars, and this could be a great way to do it. Having Drew unseat Brock, Roman out-spear Goldberg, Sasha tap out Stratus, would all help set them up to be that next generation of nostalgic stars.
Nostalgia will always sell, and we will see the stars like Undertaker, Triple H, John Cena, Kane & Goldberg still pop up until they can’t anymore. Once that generation of stars finally hangs up their boots, they will need a next generation to properly take over.
