For years now, WWE promos have mostly landed on the miss side of the spectrum. They would come off flat or just plain cheesy. However, on the build to Wrestlemania 36, without crowds to interrupt with chants we have gotten some truly incredible promos from WWE. People like Edge, Randy Orton, Seth Rollins, John Cena, Bray Wyatt, Miz & Morrison and more have sounded better than ever. Is the lack of a crowd to play to making promos in WWE better?
No Distractions
While a crowd can add a lot to a match, when someone is trying to get on the microphone and cut a promo to sell their match to fans, that is when they will usually act as a detractor. From the always annoying “What?” chants to just general chatter, you have seen fans take many promos down by not letting the performer talk. Meanwhile in the isolated area of the performance center, that has been removed. Edge was able to talk right down the camera on the first performance center RAW, which called back to promos of old. This gives that personal connection to the TV audience that modern promos will often lack. All the Edge promo lacked was Mene Gene standing nearby.
Should WWE Do Their Promos Backstage?
This could trigger a long term change within WWE. While some promos need to be done in-front of a crowd, especially if it will involve a run-in from a rival or a brawl, the majority could be done in a backstage area. Without needing to play to the crowd, performers can focus on their opponent and making people want that match. The promos between Edge & Randy Orton have driven hype through the roof for their match, with many wanting this to be the main event of one of the nights of Wrestlemania 36.
Fans come to a live wrestling show to see action in the ring, not to see people talk about having a match for 10 plus minutes at a time. While promos are an essential piece of the wrestling puzzle, it might be for the best to keep them away from live crowds even once live crowds are back in the arenas.
