Another edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is coming to us here this evening. Not quite live but it’s coming all the same! In a unique bout tonight, Drew Gulak will fight on behalf of his newly established friend and student of sorts, Daniel Bryan! If he can defeat Shinsuke Nakamura tonight, Daniel Bryan will get an Intercontinental title opportunity! I’m Jordan Huie, you are here with us at the Overtimer where as always you can expect a live recap and results from the show as they come, plus previews of everything to expect. In the interest of predictions, I’ve got a no-spoiler rule. It’s a little tricky for us to get ’em right now anyway! With Mania now fast approaching let’s not waste any time!
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Drew Gulak
A couple of weeks ago, Daniel Bryan and his new buddy Drew Gulak ran across WWE Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn and his Artist Collective. Sami berated Bryan for teaming up with Gulak rather than joining up with his own stable. In response, Daniel laughed off his IC title victory, accusing him of “barely” even being a champion. This set up a tag match the next week, where Bryan and Gulak faced off against Sami’s boys, Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro. The babyfaces got the victory but Sami was none too pleased with their tricky ring styles. In the ensuing argument, this match was set up.
If Drew Gulak can defeat Shinsuke Nakamura here in singles action, it will earn his friend Daniel Bryan a chance at the WWE Intercontinental Championship. It’s not every day that someone has to earn somebody else’s chance, almost a hearkening back to last year’s Kofimania storyline where it ultimately fell on Big E and Xavier Woods to help Kofi get his shot at the WWE Championship. Ironically, Daniel Bryan was the defending champion at that point.
For Gulak, this would be a pretty big upset. He had that one great singles match with Bryan at Elimination Chamber, the match of the night in my view, where he took him to the limit. But he hasn’t actually gotten a major singles victory to his name since joining SmackDown. This seems like an ideal opportunity to change that, since Bryan going after the IC title sure seems like the plan. Gulak over.
