At Wrestlemania 36, we were supposed to see Universal Champion Goldberg face Roman Reigns. Due to health concerns in the wake of COVID-19, Roman Reigns will not be performing at the event, and thus WWE needs a new opponent for Goldberg. That will revealed as Braun Strowman, one of the other top names on Smackdown Live. While not as big a match as that of Roman vs. Goldberg in terms of star power, it might have been the better option all along for telling a good story into the show, all based around the finisher of Goldberg.
Can Goldberg Hit The Jackhammer?
While the spear might be his iconic manuver, it is simply a prelude to the Jackhammer, which he would end his opponents with. After running through them, he would hoist them up for a suplex, and slam them down in dominant fashion. Since his WWE return, he has used the move to put away men like Dolph Ziggler, Kevin Owens, and more. However, as age catches up to the legend, he has gotten sloppy. His attempt at the Jackhammer to The Undertaker in Saudi Arabia was more akin to a very dangerous brainbuster, as both men lacked the strength to do the move. So we have a former champion, once able to lift up even The Big Show with this mighty move, starting to struggle with it.
Braun Strowman Would Challenge Goldberg To Think Outside The Box
Now enter The Monster Among Men. Braun Strowman is 6’8″ and around 385 lbs, a hard task for anyone to lift up for a move of this type. While Goldberg could work him down with a flurry of spears, his main finisher would be near impossible to hit. This adds a very simple storytelling dynamic to the contest, with the veteran needing to get creative to remain champion, a much more interesting story than ‘both men use the spear’, which was the draw for Roman Reigns vs. Goldberg.
WWE is still dancing around Roman Reigns not being at the event, and has yet to announce Braun as Goldbergs new opponent, but with Roman making it clear on his own social media he is out, this will come in the next few days.
