Another edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is coming to us here this evening. Not quite live but it’s coming all the same! Tonight, one of the longest running rivalries in WWE gets another renewal as the Usos, Jimmy and Jey, take on Kofi Kingston and Big E of the New Day, with a WrestleMania title shot on the line! My name is Jordan Huie, you are here with us at the Overtimer where as always you can expect a live recap and results from the show as they come, plus previews of everything to expect. With Mania now fast approaching let’s not waste any time!
The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) vs. The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso)
For years, these two teams have been going at it. Just purely going by televised matches, they’ve wrestled each other dozens of times. The funny thing though is that it’s usually not a throwaway bout. Generally they’re wrestling on PPV, almost always with a title on the line. They faced off in the only tag team title Hell In A Cell match to date. And even when they aren’t the main focus of angles, they always take a moment to remind fans of their storied past, how they respect one another but always want to be better than the other as well. They have passionately fought over who is the best team in WWE for quite some time.
It’s kind of novel really. It’s the only thing of it’s kind in WWE, as they seem to be the only two tag teams that the company consistently takes seriously. They seem to accept that the New Day and the Usos both work best as units, and that has been a powerful thing for them. Now granted, you could argue that this has been quite overdone. Indeed it’s a well they love going back to and personally I’d have waited a while longer before having them face off again. But they’ve only done it so often because of how good the results always are.
Tonight they face off in a rare kind of match that they haven’t had together yet, as they face off in an Empty Arena scenario for the first time. It’s something we’ve of course seen plenty of in the past couple of weeks, but it’s a new challenge for everyone who has to deal with it. We’ll see how these tandems fare. I trust them with it more than any other set of teams in WWE, I can say that. The winners of this match will of course go on to challenge the Miz and John Morrison at WrestleMania. While it’s certainly possible that we come to a draw and make for a three-way, the storyline has clearly been positioning the Usos as the main challengers and I figure we’re still doing that. Usos over.
