On this past weeks episode of Smackdown Live, we saw a video package that started to tell the story of Jeff Hardy. One of the most popular stars in WWE history, he has spent the last few years either injured or teaming with his brother Matt Hardy. Now that Matt Hardy has left WWE for AEW, Jeff has a chance to be a singles star once again at 42 years old. Despite years of abuse and a damaged body, is WWE about to give Jeff Hardy a huge push, just to keep him away from AEW?
Jeff Hardy Has Always Been Great For Business In WWE
With his unique image and daredevil persona, few people have captured the attention of fans quite like Jeff Hardy. Because of this, he has always been great at moving tickets and merchandise for WWE. While tickets aren’t a factor at the moment for WWE, building Jeff back up to a main event level could help sell tickets and shirts when things get back to normal. At his peak, he was able to outsell even John Cena in terms of merchandise.
A Hardys Reunion In AEW Could Be Huge
With AEW having one of, if not the best tag team division in the world of wrestling, an all time great team like the Hardy Boys could be huge. Their run in WWE left something to be desired, and a company with creative control and respect for tag team wrestling like AEW would let them do some truly incredible things with teams like The Young Bucks, Private Party, Best Friends, TH2 and Lucha Bros.
Nostalgia Sells
While keeping him from AEW might be one reason WWE might want to push Jeff Hardy, there is another one that is obvious. While WWE has milked every ounce of nostalgia out of the Attitude Era, they are just getting started with the Ruthless Aggression era, where we saw Jeff Hardy truly become the star he is known as today. He is one of the few stars from that era that still has untapped potential in the ring, as others from that generation are either retired or not special enough to bring back. The only other people from that generation still active on a frequent basis in WWE are Randy Orton & Rey Mysterio, making Jeff Hardy valuable.
