AEW Dynamite begins, live once more! Here in the Daily’s Place we got daylight! Cool! In our opening match of the night, Joey Janela takes on Cody Rhodes! Huge amounts of pyro. Handshake before the bell.
Cody vs. Joey Janela
Lock-up. Cody takes him into the ropes, clean break. Lock-up, Cody gets him into a headlock. Shot to the ropes, shoulder blocks nailed. Joey with a duck under, Cody blocks, sunset flip exchange, for 2 counts, legsweeps for 2 counts, Cody bridges out but Joey rolls him up for 2! Knife edge chop but Cody is trying to gut it out! Exchange of chops now. Joey with a knee to the gut. Janela shoots him off the ropes for a chop, Cody yells in his face. Blocks a chop with a kick and chops him in the back! Arm wringer, takes him into the corner. Forearms from Cody, elbow strike to the back of the head. Pulls him to the middle of the ring, Delayed Vertical Front Suplex for a 2 count! Delayed suplexes are popular in AEW.
Joey blocks a kick, trips him down, Rolling Wheel Kick! Rake of the back. Joey taking it to his back now. Forearms to the face. Power whip to the corner! And another to the opposite corner! Charges, flying back elbow! Cody cinches him in a full nelson off another attempt, tries for Cross-Rhodes but Janela with a Snapmare counter bounces Cody throat-first off the rope! Joey pulls him up, nicely executed Back Suplex for a 2 count. Springing stomp to the back of the head. Snapmare, body scissors. Cody grabs the feet to try and pry them apart. Stacks him up to break it for a 2 count, Cody with a big punches but Janela returns it and knocks Cody to the floor! Janela with an elbow off the apron, throws Cody right into the barricade.
Joey with a knife edge chop, puts him against the stage and batters him. Cody reverses a whip and sends him into the rampway. They fight up onto the ramp. Knife edge chop, big punch, Joey just walks up to the tunnel… gets a big head start and flies at him but Cody sidesteps and sends him into the ropes, Disaster Kick! Off the stage he hits a Corkscrew Moonsault! Nicely done! There’s a lot more people in the crowd than usual for this and it is noticeably louder. Throws Janela into the ring. Cody with a Dustin Uppercut, Bicycle Kick, Janela responds with a Superkick that drops him! Joey going up top. Flying Elbow Drop for a nearfall! Joey up top again but Cody stops him, Reverse Superplex! Up there in the wind it didn’t look easy but they hit it.
Janela barely kicks out! Cody rips off the weight belt, contemplates using it but throws it into the crowd where Hikaru Shida grabs it. Janela counters a Cross-Rhodes with a spinning back elbow, wants a Package Piledriver but Cody reverses with a big Powerslam! Cody wants a Disaster Kick but Janela catches him out of the air and drives him into the mat with a HARD German Suplex! Damn! Joey hits the ropes a few times for a wild clothesline that flips him inside out! Janela up top again, wants a Moonsault Press, Cody evades it, Joey rolls through – Springboard Cody Cutter for a nearfall!! Cody waits for him to stand and another exchange of forearms. Cody with a thrust kick, exchange of punches. Joey getting the advantage slowly but surely. Joey starts to hit the ropes but Cody grabs him and nails the Cross-Rhodes and it gets the win.
Winner: Cody Rhodes
Interesting match, much more strike oriented than most on prime time TV which is a sensible way to combine these two styles. Still had some cool spots as well. Cody and Janela shake hands again after the match.
