AEW Dynamite is live once again here tonight! We’ve got a fair few unique match-ups tonight, not least of which Cody Rhodes’ bout with Joey Janela! Everyone’s tested negative which is of course awesome news in general and also means none of the advertised matches will have to change. Here at the Overtimer you can expect the same in-depth coverage as always, which means live recaps and results plus a preview of everything that’s on tap! Let’s get to it!
Cody Rhodes vs. Joey Janela
A few months ago, Cody was interviewed by F4WOnline and was asked who he felt was the biggest surprise success on the roster. Cody said that this was something he largely based off of merch sales and, interestingly, named Joey Janela as someone whose stuff sold far better than expected. This is particularly notable given that Janela has never been all that frequently featured on Dynamite, meaning he’s done this with much less exposure than other surprise hits like Orange Cassidy or Hikaru Shida. Cody said this intrigued him because, as goes without saying, the two of them are wholly different and he admitted to not totally understanding his appeal, but wanted to find out.
It seems a little meaningful to me then that he’s going up against him one-on-one here, given that one can assume Cody always chooses his own opponents. The two should make for an interesting dichotomy. Cody’s oldschool ways and smooth stylings meeting Janela’s more reckless, inventive and down-and-dirty fair. It’s also the first time we’ve seen Janela wrestle in AEW since week 1 of the Pandemic. It’s weird and very sad to think that was back in March now.
Cody of course has a lot on his plate coming up. He’s made it past the semifinals of the TNT title tournament and now has but the monsterous, unstoppable and undefeated Lance Archer in his way. He’ll face off with him at Double or Nothing in a few weeks where the winner will be crowned the first-ever TNT Champion. I would certainly not expect either man to lose between now and then. Archer is probably the safer pick to stay unbeaten until that big match but I wouldn’t see much logic in having Cody get upset either. So Cody to go over here, but only after getting a solid taste of what Janela’s capable of. It’s his first major Dynamite match in a long while after all.
