Remember last year when there was scuttlebutt about The Undertaker signing a lifetime deal with WWE? There was a period before that where he was doing appearances outside of WWE then he signed with the company again. No rolling contract for the Deadman. It turns out that Undertaker’s deal was for 15 years.
15 Years, A Lifetime—What Is Time For The Undertaker?
So, there are a few things about this. One thing is what capacity can WWE use The Undertaker in following his full retirement? He’s never really shown that he would be a good fit at the commentary booth. You could say that he’s been on the mic in WWE since the New Generation. Before that, it was either Paul Bearer talking for him or he kept things brief.
Prior to the 15-20 minute opening promo segment, promo time was kept to a minimum. Who they’re facing, when the match is taking place, what they’re going to do it, why they’re doing it, and when the event is taking place. WWE talent at the time got all of that in a promo under 4 minutes. Undertaker could hold his own on the mic during the New Generation and the Attitude Era but he never really wow’d me with his mic skills.
So, a position at the booth? Ehh, who knows. He could be a trainer but would he want to be that involved?
The Answer Is In The Details
WWE’s plans for The Undertaker become clearer with the details of the contract. While literally nothing was revealed about it other than the length, we can gather that most of that 15 years is for control of The Undertaker gimmick in the company. It all comes down to merch and using his likeness. Video games, animation, and so on. The likeness and gimmick are permanently tied to Mean Mark.
The more intriguing reason would’ve been that WWE was hoping to build up to a successor to the mantle of The Undertaker. That comes complete with powers, music, moves, entrance, and name. Of course, WWE would have to find a strong successor, train him, give him a dope back story, build him for a year or two, and have Undertaker face them.
You know, things WWE should’ve already laid the groundwork for so that late-40s or 50-year old Taker could face them instead of almost 60 Taker taking them on. Nah, all of that is too tangled and requires the greatest booking team WWE could gather for this sole purpose. It would also require a time machine.
