Facing The Undertaker at Wrestlemania is an incredible honour for any wrestler. His undefeated streak was incredible, and when Brock Lesnar beat him at Wrestlemania 30, everyone was shocked, a shock that has not been felt in wrestling since that day. He would bounce back and defeat Bray Wyatt & Shane McMahon in the following years, but at Wrestlemania 33 he would face Roman Reigns. The feud was as well built as it could be, and it should have passed the torch to Roman Reigns as the top heavyweight in WWE. However, the match was panned by fans and critics alike, and now by Undertaker himself.
Undertaker Broke Character Ahead Of The Last Ride
During a rare interview with ESPN, The Undertaker was speaking about his upcoming behind the scenes series for WWE Network, The Last Ride. He would watch back some matches from his career, including when he faced Reigns at Wrestlemania 33 again. He would speak on being let down by this match, and feeling disappointment for both him and Roman Reigns.
“I was so disappointed for Roman. Even after Brock Lesnar beat the streak, for guys coming up to have a match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania — especially where Roman was at — it was important for his career. Especially because he was going over. For me, in that role, I wanted to do the very best that I could do for Roman. I think the world of him. You want to be able to do the best you can for him, and you know you have no business being in the ring. Yes, I could have mailed it in. Protected myself. Only done a couple of things that I knew that I could do. But that’s just not the way I work. And it wouldn’t have been fair to him. So I just tried to do the best I could. The harder I tried, the more I did — at least in my perception — it was not a good night. It was really disappointing.”
Rehabbing His Legendary Career
The Undertaker has been on the rise since then, with him regaining his mystique as part of the Boneyard Match with AJ Styles. He also had a much better match involving Roman Reigns, when they teamed up to face the team of Drew McIntyre & Baron Corbin in a tag team match. However, this loss at Wrestlemania was not his finest moment. What is your opinion on the match between Reigns & Undertaker at Wrestlemania?
