AJ Styles was defeated by the Undertaker at WWE WrestleMania 36. This wasn’t any kind of defeat. The two faced off in a Boneyard match—extremely cinematic and one of the well-received matches from the event. This match was basically the Graveyard match between Vampiro and The Demon at WCW Bash at the Beach 2000—only better.
I’m not even sure if that does it justice, just know that the Graveyard match wasn’t good but it was fun depending on how drunk you are. AJ Styles ended up losing to The Undertaker and being buried alive. It was an alright ending to an exciting match.
WWE Superstars or WWE Superhumans?
However, whenever someone ends up buried or thrown in a coffin, they’re usually written out of WWE entirely or Undertaker takes a while to return. Styles was written off TV for a month and returned in time to get in on that road to Money In The Bank action.
It’s kind of weird but WWE always presented its in-ring talent as superhumans who come back from injury and trauma in quickly. The only thing that would’ve made that match the complete Undertaker experience is showing a post-segment after the WWE logo with someone digging up Styles.
AJ Styles Wants A Rematch Against The Undertaker
That brings us to a second showdown with Styles and Taker. When one takes such an ass beating that you’re buried under six feet of dirt and survive, you have two options. The first and wisest one is to not anger or run into the person who planted you like potatoes and rode off into the night. AJ Styles took option two: spoil for a rematch.
WWE played up Styles’ defeat at WrestleMania 36 going into Money In The Bank which points to a possible Styles vs. Undertaker II. On WWE After the Bell, Styles said he’s up for another match with The Undertaker. The question is how will they top the first one? That will always be the question when the first showdown is really good or tells a great story. It goes hand-in-hand with wrestlers always being optimistic about facing someone again.
This isn’t a showdown that WWE can just run in a regular match or gimmick at PPV. It’s going to require another cinematic match and could probably be the Deadman’s final match.
Yeah, you hear that every year in regards to The Undertaker it could be true. The Boneyard match established the best way for the Undertaker to go out post-WrestleMania XXX.
