Nearly every wrestling company has done a two belt gimmick. WWE has done it multiple times and usually signifies the ending of the brand split. Currently NJPW have brought both the IWGP Heavyweight Championship and IWGP Intercontinental Championship. Now NXT have brought both of their championships together. Although it’s great for Kieth Lee, it gets us thinking how this is going to work in NXT. Especially with them not having as much championships as other companies.
Making two become one.
This is kind of the usual way companies go when they make a double champion. They just defend the championship as one and when you lose the match you lose both. Even though this does sound like the easy way to take it forward. It kind of feels like NXT will definitely do it at some point. At the start though, it looks like they will do this for a while. Then closely when Kieth is going to lose the championship. They’ll split the championships up in a PPV event. It looks like this could be put off until the crowds return. This is a good thing though as Kieth Lee deserves a lengthy rein as both champions.
Defending it twice.
The other way NXT could do this. Would be to defend the championships twice in one night. It kind of happened before with the Undisputed Era as Adam Cole defended both belts on the same night for the tag team belt and the NXT championship. Although this was the decision of the General Manager; William Regal and with him being a good guy manager. He can’t really be used to put that together if Kieth Lee is a good guy too. The fact that Kieth Lee is a good guy, there’s no sense changing to a heel, it could make it hard for a double match in one PPV.
Although this could be done by Kieth Lee just accepting challenges from two wrestlers. In a very good guy way taking on multiple opponents in one night. Even though, mostly, this could be boring getting two matches in one night with the same wrestler but Kieth Lee is one of the best and watching him twice in one night wouldn’t be that bad.
