In just two weeks, Randy Orton will face Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship. This match is projected to be the main event this year’s Summerslam, which would mean that either he and Brock Lesnar would main event Summerslam every year since 2012.
The Past Eight Main Events Have Involved Brock Lesnar Or Randy Orton
Starting in 2012 when Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar would main event, to 2019 when Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar would be in the main event again, he’s been one of two men to always be in the main event. He’s faced John Cena, The Undertaker, Roman Reigns, and was in a fatal four way alongside Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe. However, he shares this with Randy Orton.
In 2013, Ortons cash in following John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan was the final match of the night, and 2016 saw the first time matchup of Lesnar & Orton. This shows a growing issue with WWE, relying on established stars alongside Lesnar & Orton. Even this year, the fresh main event star Drew McIntyre will face a stalwart name in Orton for the title.
It’s hard to argue that these main events have ever felt small. We consistently get huge matches to top ‘the biggest party of the summer’.
This Could Be Disrupted By The Fiend vs. Braun Strowman
While McIntyre vs. Orton is the biggest match on the card, and something fans are looking forward to. However, there is another world title feud on Smackdown that might take the main event slot. The Fiend will be looking to take the Universal Championship from Braun Strowman.
While this isn’t the biggest match, it’s likely to be another cinematic match like their swamp fight at Backlash. This gives it a very high chance of closing out the show, as it can be hard to follow a cinematic match with anything more grounded. We’ve only seen two cinematic matches not close shows, those being the Firefly Funhouse match at Wrestlemania, and the fight between Street Profits & Viking Raiders from Backlash.
