Last night at Clash Of Champions, both the WWE Champion Drew McIntyre & Universal Champion Roman Reigns successfully defended their championships. They were both great matches in their own way, with Reigns vs. Uso getting the nod as the better match from most fans due to it’s tight storytelling and great performances. The question of ‘Who’s next?’ is on the tongues of all their fans, but what if the answer to that question is each other?
Drew McIntyre Wants To Unify The WWE & Universal Championships
While speaking with ViBe Sports about his victory over Randy Orton, McIntyre would throw down a major challenge. When talking about the championship titles in WWE, he’d express interest in a champion vs. champion match for both top titles.
“I think we’ve got good balance with the titles on every show. Every show has like how the Intercontinental title or the US title that leads into the heavyweight title. Obviously our females are represented with their titles and the tag teams, so we’re pretty good title wise. If I was to have another one, I’d like to have a super match between myself and Roman Reigns and his Universal Championship and have one dominant champion. That’d be a heck of a match, he’s been on top for so long and been gone for a bit, but returned with a new attitude and new look. He’s a lot bigger and badder than he ever was, he’s still a marquee player and I’m at a point where I’m trying to prove myself to be of that caliber and if we could have that title vs. title match that would be about as big as it gets.”
McIntyre & Reigns had a Wrestlemania match two years ago, but both have improved immeasurably since then in just about all aspects.
A Match To Make Survivor Series Feel Like A Big Deal Once Again
Survivor Series might be one of the longest running WWE PPV events, but it has lost it’s luster. Last year they got a boost of interest from adding NXT talent, but it was the same brand vs. brand storyline. It feels like Retribution will face a unit of WWE superstars in the traditional Survivor Series match, but that isn’t the type of match that will sell people on the show.
Meanwhile, a champion vs. champion match with ‘Winner Takes All’ stakes? That would absolutely get people buzzing, especially as McIntyre & Reigns have been on the top of their games as of late. This could even wait for Wrestlemania, and it would be a match that no one would argue could be worthy of the main event slot. It would leave WWE with one less world championship on a vast roster, but could make the remaining belt feel all the more important. Few would argue against unifying the Universal Championship into the WWE Championship, and starting fresh later down the road.
