G1 Climax 30 Night 11 saw the first time meeting between five-time former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, G1 Climax 22, and G1 Climax 24 winner and CHAOS member Kazuchika Okada and former NEVER Openweight Champion Jeff Cobb.
Jeff Cobb came into the match after defeating former IWGP Heavyweight, IWGP Intercontinental, and IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion and Bullet Club member “Switchblade” Jay White during G1 Climax 30 Night 9.
G1 Climax 30: Okada v Cobb
Okada came into the match after taking a physical beating from current NEVER Openweight Champion and Suzuki-Gun leader Minoru Suzuki, but being able to pick up a crafty pinfall victory.
Cobb continued his sharp form against Okada, who looked to be worn down after his match against Suzuki. Cobb’s Greco Roman background was on full display due to his array of high impact suplexes that were able to keep Okada on the defensive.
Okada had his moments, due to the use of his impressively high Dropkick technique, but he never was able to string together the offense needed to put Cobb away in a fashion he would have liked.
Cobb likely wrestled his best match of the tournament and was on the verge of putting Okada away, but Okada was able to call on his Llave Lucha Libre background to catch Cobb in pinning predicament.
Okada was able to gain the fall at the 11 minutes and 3 seconds mark to move his G1 Climax 30 A Block total to 8 points, giving him a direct path to the tournament finals.
While Cobb’s defeat likely eliminates him from any hope of advancing to the finals, he’s recent run of form shows that he’s elevating his game to the next level and will be a threat for competition in New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) for quite some time.
Okada’s October 10th match against former NEVER Openweight Champion and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member Shingo Takagi will be another physical battle that could wear him down.
