Over the past few months, there has been a main event feud in NJPW between EVIL & Tetsuya Naito. It all started at the end of the 2020 New Japan Cup, when EVIL won the tournament, shocking many. At the time, both were members of the Los Ingobernables De Japon stable, with EVIL being one of the first men Naito recruited for his brand of the stable. We were all set for a battle between faction members.
However, EVIL had been conspiring with Bullet Club & Dick Togo during the shutdown caused by COVID-19. He turned on Naito, and then took the IWGP Heavyweight & Intercontinental Championships for his own at Dominion. At the end of summer, EVIL & Naito clashed again, Naito winning the gold back in Jingu.
A third clash in the G1 followed, with EVIL winning. That brings us to where we are at today. At Power Struggle, the main event is once again Tetsuya Naito vs. EVIL, and Naito is just as thrilled as most fans are.
Tetsuya Naito vs. EVIL Is Not The Epic Feud NJPW Hoped It Would Be
All the ingredients were here for a good feud, there was a past connection, natural chemistry and both are great workers. However, each match has been roughly the same, and have been done in rapid succession.
This has led to fans being less than thrilled about another match. Naito would echo these sentiments in a backstage interview following his tag team match on Road To Power Struggle.
“You guys all probably though, ‘Again?’. So did I. So, I want to apologize to those who purchased their ticket for the Osaka show on November 7th. If you don’t want to see the main event, you should leave right before our match.”
These are about as scathing of remarks as it gets, telling fans to leave the arena before the match has a chance to play out. He’s not wrong in his comments. Their matches have been roughly the same each time, a lot of brawling, cheating from Togo and EVIL, and probably some low blows for good measure.
If NJPW added an extra stipulation to the match, it might be interesting. NJPW could pull out their first cage match, or do anything else to make this just a bit more interesting, but it feels like we’ll get the same thing as usual come Power Struggle.
