New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) continued Best of the Super Juniors 27 (BOSJ 27) on November 20, 2020, at the legendary Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) reduced crowd of 696 showed excitement as the junior heavyweights entered a pivotal night of tournament action.
The opening series match of the event saw NJPW Noge Dojo Young Lion Yuya Uemura (0-2) [0 points] take on Suzuki-Gun member El Desperado (1-1) [2 points]. Uemura came into the match after dropping the fall to former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member Bushi on November 18th. El Desperado gained an upset victory over the former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, BOSJ 25 winner, and LIJ member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi on the same night.
El Desperado played mind games with the Young Lion early, refusing to engage the former’s charge at the opening bell. Uemura had used the strategy to surprise his more experienced opponents during the series.
Despite not getting the opening jump on the Suzuki-Gun member, Uemura wrestled a highly competitive match against the far more experienced wrestler, giving him a lot of trouble throughout. Surprisingly, El Desperado had to go deep into his technique list to deal with the quickly improving Young Lion.
El Desperado was able to gain the fall at the 11 minutes and 26 seconds mark with the El Es Clero cradle technique to move his BOSJ 27 record to (2-1) [4 points]. The loss moves Uemura to (0-3) [0 points], yet doesn’t convey how well he has wrestled up to this point in the tournament.
On November 23rd, El Desperado faced “Way to the Grand Master” Master Wato to continue his BOSJ 27 campaign, while Uemura faced IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and Bullet Club member “Bone Soldier” Taiji Ishimori on the same night.
